I just used a paper towel, my finger, and some compressed air. I love how the oil drips down the engine casing when you pull the filters out. lol Took some time to change the oil, but it was fairly easy. I used the KTM filters and the recommended Motorex Crosspower 4T 10W/60.

Yes, the performance of your shock with those kind of miles is significantly worse than a rebuilt shock with fresh oil. I promise their is a service interval for your adventurous bike. you can justify your cheapness and laziness any which way you want but your shock isn’t working as good as it could be.

Metal is different in newer bikes. I don't pretend to know when newer starts, however, my 82 Suzuki GS450 needs valve adjustments like clockwork every 4k miles. The bike will start running bad a couple hundred miles after 4k. I do the adjustments myself cuz the bike is stupid simple, and it runs like a top again.

I just bought a KTM 690 with recommended OCI's at 6000 miles, same for the air filter. ? Of course they also recommend a $20 a liter magic elixir. I'll use a $8 a quart oil that fully meets their stated specs at likely 1500-3000 mile intervals, depending on what I learn over time. My first indication is shifting smoothness and feel of the oil

Oil change at 7.5hrs engine side, 15hrs gearbox side (split system 530) with filter every other engine oil change, so every 15hrs (small capacity on engine oil on these bikes) If l had a later bike, l would do oil at 15hrs and filter every other change - so filter every 30hrs.
