This happens to me all the time. Just unplug the mic and plug it back in. If that doesn't work, do it again. If it doesn't work after five times, contact Microsoft for a replacement headset. Edit: to ensure it's working, tap the mic with your finger instead of saying something and look for the green circle to light up.

At $149.99, a motion-tracking camera add-on for the Xbox 360 is a tough sell, especially considering that the entry level variation of the Xbox 360 itself is only $199.99. I disassembled it and fixed that issue, then I modded the cable by removing the old Kinect connector and soldering a USB cable + a 12V 1.5A Power adapter to connect it to my Xbox 360 Elite without buying a separate adapter.
