Hi all. Freshly back from a week in Rio De Janeiro. Oddly not a lot of info on this forum on Rio, so wanted to throw something out there. This is not intended to be a detailed trip report, but just some thoughts for folks who are interested. ~The main tourist sites are easily done solo, no need for tour groups.
It's like if someone dropped new York in the middle of a jungle - there is a lot of concrete and a lot of nature and seeing them together is pretty cool. But Rio is considered even in Brazil to be a rather dangerous place like I must imagine NY is for Americans, which is to say that it's a big city with a lot of people so there is danger in that. Save. the population of cosmopolitan san diego is about 3 million. the population of cosmopolitan Rio de Janeiro is about 12 million+. the reputation of san diego is such that the world hears very little about crime in the city. in actualality, there is the same type of crimes on the streets of san diego as in Rio, just not to the extent as Rio. Does this mean you should avoid Mexico? Absolutely not. There are plenty of places in the country that are safe for tourists and residents.
